How to unblock a drain!

Blocked Kitchen Sink:

If it's just your kitchen that blocked - it's probably grease.

Try Plunging it - remember to have plenty of water above the plunger.

If it's just running slowly - put the plug in the bowl or both bowl's if their are two.

Fill the trough to the top with hot water (hotter the better)

When they are full turn the tap off and put a couple of good squirts or dishwashing liquid or washing powder)

You don't want bubbles just hot soapy water!

Use a fork or gloves to pull the plug/s so you don't burn your hand.

The idea is that the head of hot water will aid in clearing the grease and debris.

You want to encourage flow! (Plunge, Volume of Water, Mechanically clear via rodding)

We would mechanically clear it or blast it with 5000psi pressure jetting so it looked like new!

We could even put a camera up the drain to confirm it!

Blocked Shower:

Use a torch to look into the drain.

Try to remove the grate. (be careful not to damage it)

You can use a sani snake or coat hanger to try and catch on to any hair.

Keep using your torch!

You might want gloves and a bag - it can be pretty smelly / grotty!

Blocked Toilet:

Do you really want to be doing this?

Your whole drain may be blocked and you may be just playing with brown water for possibly no success.

Only the bravest read on....

Assuming that it's just the toilet blocked and not the whole drain you may like to try plunging it with a mop.(old style mop)

The old mop's have a nice long handle (highly advantageous)

The mop will act as a plunger and hopefully push the cause of the blockage through the trap.

Be careful not to scratch the toilet china as it will be scratched for life and look like their is little pencil lines in your toilet!

Don't use drain rods through toilet.

Blocked Storm Water Sump:

You need to pale or suck out the water to expose the sump.

Once it is dry - dig out the sand and or debris restricting flow and drainage.

If tank walls are oily appropriate cleaning and disposal will be required.

Never Use Draino!!!

O.K. maybe not never! But there are problems with using a chemical drain cleaner.

The idea with a chemical drain cleaner is that via a chemical reaction with the water the chemical drain cleaner will degrade the cause of the blockage to such an extent that it will breakdown and clear.

Allowing the drain cleaner and blockage to flow down the drain. All good in theory. The problem begins when the chemical drain cleaner doesn't clear the blockage.

This leaves you with a sink, basin, toilet or bath full of water etc that is now quiet caustic!

This is obviously potentially quiet dangerous.  Watch your skin and eyes!

Your tools and drain rods won't like it either. (They will rust in front of your eyes!)

The chemical drain cleaner also likes to set into a nice crusty substance further compounding the blockage if it is unable to clear it!

So I guess, don't just throw drain cleaner in and expect it do miracles!

You think how much soap you need to put on a pan to clean it without any rubbing!

Also have a battle plan to deal with the caustic water if the drain doesn't clear.
